"Shikata ga nai - It can't be helped"

From Yuki's page:

Its meaning depends on context.

(Generally)
It cannot be helped.
There is no help for it.
It is inevitable.
There is nothing for it but to do.
have no choice but to do.
have no other way (than).
It is no use

helplessly,
against one's will,
unwillingly,
reluctantly,
be obliged to do,

(Or)
be anxious to do
be dying to do
want very much to do
be dying for.

example,
I am anxious to drink beer.
"Watashui(I)  wa biiru(beer) wo nomi-taku-te (to drink) shikata ga nai."

What if Hitler won?

If Hitler had won, would in change much?  In the long-term, no!

"When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they seem invincible but in the end, they always fall - think of it, always."  - Mohandas Gandhi
